Portugal sales of Spanish food retailer Mercadona jump 78% in 2022

By the end of 2023, Mercadona plans to invest €1.1 billion "to continue driving forward its strategic transformation plan" - with €280 million of this earmarked for Portugal.

Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona last year had sales of €737 million in Portugal, up 77.6% on 2021, narrowing its loss for the year to €50 million, from a loss of €64 million the previous year, the company announced on Tuesday.

During the presentation of the results made today in Valencia, Juan Roig, the CEO of the chain, which is Spain’s market leader, said that it plans to invest €280 million in Portugal this year.

Last year, Mercadona’s consolidated sales on a like-for-like basis increased by 11% to €31.041 billion, of which €30.304 billion relates to the operations in Spain and €737 million to Portugal, where it currently has 39 outlets.

In 2021, Mercadona’s sales in the 29 shops it then owned in Portugal had been €415 million.

Throughout 2022, Mercadona said, it created more than 3,000 new jobs, of which 1,000 were created in Portugal. It ended the year with a total workforce of 99,000 people – “all on permanent contracts”.
